Answer:If there is sunlight...
Yes, the plant can still grow as it uses carbon dioxide+water under light energy+chlorophyll to produce glucose+oxygen+water (process: photosynthesis). Thus, photosynthesis is able to produce oxygen to sustain the plant from breathing to continue to live.
If there isn't any sunlight...
No, the plant cannot survive as it does not have any oxygen to breathe in even if the plant had excess sucrose(starch) stored in itself. They still won't be able to survive as they have no oxygen to breathe in to carry on with their normal body functions.
for if there isnt sunlight, can the plant use aerobic respiration (since there is no oxygen) ?
ReplyDeleteariel: really? can u explain to me this theory?
ReplyDeleteIn theory. They 'inhale' Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and 'exhale' Oxygen (O2).
To improve the above statement...
since plants "inhale" Carbon Dioxide which is made up of one molecule of Carbon and 2 of Oxygen, plants can not live without oxygen because without oxygen there would be no carbon dioxide in the first place. is that true? http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_plants_live_without_oxygen
But plants can undergo dark stage isn't it? So does it still need oxygen? Dark reactions occur in the stomata. Carbon dioxide is converted to sugar using ATP and NADPH. This process is known as carbon fixation or the Calvin cycle. Carbon dioxide is combined with a 5-carbon sugar creating a 6-carbon sugar. The 6-carbon sugar is eventually broken-down into two molecules, glucose and fructose. These two molecules make sucrose or sugar. Here is my own theory, :)
ReplyDeletei agree with the people above, plants are still going to survive as they can go throught then process called dark stage.
ReplyDeletei need to know:
Lek Chu, Jeslyn, Ibrahim, Edsel, QianYi. 2E1 ,
Carbon dioxide is converted to sugar using ATP and NADPH? What is NADPH? Calvin cycle? Whats a Fructose? is it another type of glucose?
The light dependant stage provide oxygen for the plant. So without light, the plant wil not live long if they use up the sugar for anaerobic respiration and produce ethanol, ethanol is dangerous in large amounts. It can kill the plant.
ReplyDeleteCalvin cycle is light independant stage (dark stage).
ReplyDeleteFrutose is a simple sugar found in honey and in many ripe fruits or fruit sugar. For info:
